Author & foundational feminist, in 1949, Simone de Beauvoir published The Second Sex and revolutionized feminist thought by exposing a long-hidden truth - that there is no female nature. She consulted biology, history, mythology, literature, ethnology, medicine and psychoanalysis to question the roles assigned to women.
A cultural icon during World War II, Rosie the Riveter represented the women who worked in defense industries during the war effort. Since the 1940s, she has gone on to stand as a symbol for women in the workforce and for women’s independence.
Ranked amongst the finest of Mexican artists, Frida Kahlo is viewed as an icon of feminine creativity. She is widely commemorated for her work that highlighted Mexican and indigenous culture and by feminists for her depiction of the female experience and form.
Known as “The Lady with the Lamp”, Florence Nightingale is considered to be the founder of modern nursing. Most widely recognized for her significant accomplishment of reducing mortality rates of Britain’s hospitalized soldiers in the Crimean war from 40% to 2.2%, Nightingale transformed the course of public health forever.
American aviator Bessie Coleman soared across the sky as the first African American woman to earn a pilot's license. She is recognised for pioneering achievements in aviation and her advocacy for women and African Americans in the field.
Born in 1906, Grace Hopper was a mathematician and Admiral in WWII. With an induction into the International Women's Hall of Fame and a belt of awards, including the National Medal of Technology, Hopper became well-known as a pioneer in computer technology and a female icon.
